Installing a metal roof on your shed is a smart investment. Not only does it offer longevity and resistance to extreme weather, but it’s also lightweight and energy-efficient. Whether you're replacing an old roof or building a new shed from scratch, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to properly install metal roof panels on your shed.

Before diving into the process, it’s worth understanding why metal is a top choice for shed roofing:

Step-by-Step Installation Process
1. Prepare the Shed Roof
a. Inspect and Repair
Ensure the shed framing and roof decking are in good condition. Replace any damaged wood or supports.
b. Clean and Remove Debris
Remove any remnants of old roofing, nails, or debris that could interfere with underlayment or panels.
2. Install Underlayment
Lay a waterproof underlayment over the plywood roof deck to protect against moisture infiltration.
How to do it:
Start at the eave and roll the underlayment horizontally.
Overlap edges by at least 4 inches.
Fasten with roofing staples or cap nails.
Continue upward, overlapping each course to shed water effectively.
Tip: Synthetic underlayment lasts longer and is more tear-resistant than asphalt felt.
3. Install Eave Trim (Drip Edge)
The drip edge prevents water from running under the panels.
Place along the eaves of the shed.
Secure with roofing nails or screws, about every 12 inches.
Ensure it sits flush with the edge and overlaps at corners.
4. Measure and Cut Metal Panels
Measure from the ridge (peak) to the eave, accounting for a 1"–2" overhang beyond the eaves and gables.
Use metal snips or electric shears to cut panels to length.
Wear gloves to protect hands from sharp edges.
5. Install the First Panel
Start from one lower corner (typically the side opposite the prevailing wind direction).
Place the panel square to the eave and ridge to ensure alignment.
Overhang the eave and gable edge slightly (1"–2").
Fasten to the roof using screws in the flat area of the panel (not the ridge) with rubber washers.
Install screws every 18–24 inches along each rib and into the purlins or decking.
Tip: Do not overtighten screws—compress the washer just enough to seal.
6. Install Remaining Panels
Overlap each new panel over the previous one (typically by one ridge).
Check alignment as you go to keep rows straight.
Use closure strips under panel ridges at the eave and ridge to seal gaps from insects or moisture.
7. Install Rake Trim
Install rake trim along the gable edges to cover the sides of the metal panels.
Place over panel edges and screw into decking or fascia.
Overlap sections by at least 2 inches.
Apply butyl tape or caulking between overlaps for waterproofing.
8. Install Ridge Cap
The ridge cap covers the top peak and finishes the roof.
Lay foam closure strips along the ridge.
Center the ridge cap so it overlaps both sides evenly.
Screw through the cap into each roof panel rib.
Overlap ridge cap sections by 6 inches, sealing with butyl tape or caulk.
9. Final Sealing and Inspection
Apply caulk around any penetrations (like vents or skylights).
Inspect the roof for loose fasteners, sharp edges, or unsealed seams.
Clean the roof surface of metal shavings or debris.
